Google Micro Radar can identify object orientation

When Google launched Project Soli in 2015, the company proposed a way to create gestures to control future technologies. Soli's tiny radar is small enough to fit into a smart watch that can detect movements with millimeter-accurate precision and lets you control a speaker, say the volume. But now, researchers from the University of Scotland have used the first Project Soli development kit to achieve radar identification.
The device is called RadarCat (or input and interactive radar) and is suitable for any radar system. A basic unit is a target, some of which bounce off and return to the base to launch electromagnetic waves. How long does it take for the system to get them back, and use this information to figure out the shape of the object and how to stay away from it. But since Google's Project Soli is so precise, they can not only detect external objects, but also can identify internal structures and the back surface.


Lead researcher Professor Aaron Quigley said: "These three signals together provide you with a unique fingerprint for each object." RadarCat is accurate, it can even tell the difference between the front and the back of the smartphone, or tell the glass is full or empty.
This system is surprising, but there are also some major limitations. For example, RadarCat occasionally confuses objects with similar material properties (for example, a MacBook and an aluminum alloy case). The next step for RadarCat creators is to improve the ability to distinguish between similar objects of the system. It shows that they can use it not only to say that the glass is full or empty, for example, but also its content.
