US announces new batch of pending pesticides

According to Agrow reported on October 6, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued another list of pesticides that entered the registration evaluation process. The latest list includes: conventional fungicide propamocarb, pesticides cloretryil, pyriproxyl, spinetoram, spinosad, herbicides bensulfuron methyl, metsulfuron, pyrithione Ether and humulone. The new pesticide assessment will be completed in 2017 (benzisulfuron is completed in 2019).

Carbamate fungicides, propamocarb hydrochloride, are registered for use in various fruit, vegetable crops, lawns and ornamental plants. The registration companies are Agriphar and Bayer CropScience, agro-chemical companies in Belgium. The EPA expects comprehensive ecological risk assessment data, including assessments of endangered species and a complete human health risk assessment for all users.

Sumitomo Chemical Co., a pyrethroid insecticide, is mainly used for indoor pest control and has no agricultural use. The EPA expects to complete more data and conduct a comprehensive ecological risk assessment. For example, it may be necessary to revise residential exposure assessments and occupational risk assessments. The EPA pointed out that the expected completion date is 2017, but it can be extended if there is a need to assess the cumulative risk of pyrethroid insecticides.

Pyriproxyfen is a pyridine insecticide used in field crops and fruits, vegetables, and residential and industrial insecticides. The registered companies are Maxim Chemical Plant and US MGK. The EPA expects to conduct a comprehensive ecological risk assessment and revise the human health risk assessment. The available toxicity data is sufficient to support the registration review, while the lack of immune and neurotoxicity data.

Dowson's insecticides spinetoram and spinosad are registered for both agricultural and non-agricultural uses, including various fruits and vegetables. The EPA pointed out that the very similar chemical structures of pesticides determine their toxicological levels. The EPA calls for a comprehensive ecological risk assessment with sufficient human toxicity data and no additional data to be added, but a new overall risk assessment is needed.

The phosphonated sulfonylurea herbicide Bensulfuron-methyl, registered for use in rice broad-leaved weeds and sedge control. The EPA expects more data, conducts a comprehensive ecological risk assessment, and calls for a comprehensive human health risk assessment.

Metsulfuron is a sulfonylurea herbicide used in wheat, barley, sorghum and pastures. Registered companies are Ammtide, Ailida Life Sciences, Celsius, Kemertan, DuPont, Nufarm, and Rotam. The EPA anticipates the need to update and improve ecological and human health risk assessment data.

Pyrimuron is registered with cotton herbicides, Celsius and DuPont. The EPA expects to conduct a complete ecological risk assessment and update the human health risk assessment.

Syngenta's humulone is a post-emergence graminicide herbicide for wheat, barley, and rye. The EPA anticipates a thorough human health and ecological risk assessment.
