Visteon's new pulse counting air conditioning control system reduces costs by 25%

The full range of automotive cockpit electronics supplier Visteon has announced that it has successfully developed the second generation pulse counting air conditioning control system. The system can greatly reduce harness complexity and weight, and can achieve 25% cost savings in the system control section compared to conventional control schemes.

The system can obtain the air conditioner actuator position information by reading the motor pulse. By using Visteon's patented control algorithm, this system only needs to control the DC motor actuator through the power line and grounding circuit, instead of the traditional feedback loop harness and position sensor. The pulse counting control system enables automotive manufacturers to use simpler, lower-cost, feedbackless DC motor actuators. In addition, the reliability of the system is improved by reducing line connections and eliminating position sensors in the air conditioner actuator.

In this system, Visteon used its system expertise to develop an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) with embedded inductive sensing elements. This microprocessor, in conjunction with Visteon's proprietary software, monitors and filters current/voltage fluctuations in permanent magnet DC motors to obtain motor position information and can use pulse counting to control the position of the air conditioning damper. Precise induction, filtering and adjustment of the pulse can achieve reliable overall system performance. Visteon's pulse counting control system can self-calibrate and monitor major operating parameters to maintain optimum performance during use. The system is compatible with a range of actuator solutions and hardware configurations, resulting in a cost-effective solution.

Visteon China Technology Center and Indian Technology Center jointly launched the first project application of the second-generation Visteon pulse counting technology and plans to start production in mid-2010. Visteon's first generation pulse counting air conditioning control system was first applied to the Chrysler Pacifica model in 2006.
